California and 15 states sue US over $200 million education funding rollback by ED

California Attorney General Rob Bonta, joined by 15 other states, has filed a lawsuit against the US Department of Education for abruptly rescinding over $200 million in previously awarded school recovery funds. The lawsuit alleges the action violates federal law and threatens crucial programs supporting students affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The coalition seeks to reinstate funding through March 2026 to protect afterschool initiatives, mental health services, and learning support for vulnerable student populations.
